Lyon Miss Top Three, Riolo Slams Fonseca's Season End
Olympique Lyonnais ended the Ligue 1 campaign just below the podium. The club suffered defeats in the final two matches, losing the chance to qualify for the Champions League.
With two games left, Lyon sat in third place, a position that had kept European qualification alive. The Champions League seemed within reach at that stage.
The consecutive losses in the closing round pushed the team down the table. The drop left Lyon outside the top three for the season.
On RMC's After Foot programme, pundit Daniel Riolo addressed the disappointing finish. He highlighted the pattern of under‑performance at the end of Paulo Fonseca's campaigns.
Co‑host Walid Acherchour echoed the sentiment, noting another season ended poorly under Fonseca. Both analysts pointed to the lack of a strong finish.
Riolo described Fonseca's post‑match comments as a "loser speech". Acherchour added that such remarks reflect a failure to deliver results when it matters most.
The criticism underscores doubts about Fonseca's capacity to secure a top‑three finish. Lyon will need to address the issue ahead of the next campaign.
