Guardiola to leave Manchester City after season
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola announced he will depart at season’s end. His side finished second in the Premier League after a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth on May 11, 2025. Guardiola joined City in 2016 and won 15 trophies including four Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies. He leaves with a 71.4% win rate and 172 victories in 241 matches.
City’s final match was a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth. Erling Haaland scored City’s equalizer in the 78th minute. Manchester United secured the Premier League title with an 83-point total.
Guardiola’s tenure included 15 major trophies. His teams won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and eight EFL Cups. He also guided City to Champions League triumphs in 2023 and 2025.
The Spaniard cited the need for a new challenge as his reason for leaving. He will be succeeded by Xabi Alonso, who agreed to join from Bayer Leverkusen on a five-year contract starting June 1, 2025.
Guardiola’s final season saw City finish 14 points behind Manchester United. His side scored 88 goals but conceded 38, the second-best defensive record in the league.
Alonso arrives after winning the Bundesliga title with Leverkusen. He led Leverkusen to a 29-game unbeaten run and their first league title in 2024.
