Rafael Leao Red Card Likely Limited to One Match
Rafael Leao was shown a straight red card for striking an opponent in the face during Portugal's friendly against Chile on June 6, 2026. The incident has raised questions about whether the Milan winger will miss the 2026 World Cup.
The match, played at Estadio Nacional do Jamor in Lisbon, ended 2-1 to Portugal thanks to goals from Goncalo Guedes and Bruno Fernandes. A scuffle erupted just before half‑time involving Joao Cancelo, Chile's Ivan Ramon and Felipe Faundez. Leao intervened as the referee arrived, raised his hands at Ramon and pushed him around the neck, leading to red cards for both players.
Article 69 of the FIFA disciplinary code mandates that a player sent off in a friendly must serve a suspension in the next official match. Consequently, Leao's next appearance for Portugal will be the World Cup warm‑up against Nigeria on June 10.
TMW notes that FIFA rarely imposes more than a single‑match ban for violent conduct that does not involve discrimination or officials. Therefore a longer suspension for Leao remains unlikely.
Given the disciplinary guidelines, Leao is expected to serve only the one‑match ban and is unlikely to miss Portugal's opening World Cup fixture.
