Ronald Araujo details mental health struggles and Barcelona recovery

🇪🇸 4 uur geleden

FC Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo described a difficult 2025-26 season marked by mental health challenges and a prolonged absence from football. The Uruguayan captain took indefinite leave after receiving a red card against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League, which triggered intense online backlash and pressure.

Araujo’s break began following the Champions League red card against Chelsea. The backlash escalated to threats targeting his family, prompting him to seek help. Barcelona granted him indefinite leave to recover, and he returned nearly six weeks later for the Spanish Super Cup final.

Speaking to The Athletic via SPORT, Araujo admitted, “I knew something wasn’t right” after the social media reaction to his red card. He described the online abuse as a low point and noted that the targeting of his family made the situation unbearable. “Since they couldn’t get to me directly, they looked for other ways,” he said.

The defender recalled the courage it took to confide in Barcelona’s leadership about his mental health struggles. “It’s not easy to tell a club like Barça, ‘Look, this is happening to me. I need help. I need to stop and step away.’” He expressed deep gratitude for the club’s support, calling their response “extremely” helpful.

Araujo returned to find fans’ support overwhelming. “Hearing the fans chant ‘Uruguayo, Uruguayo’ moved me deeply,” he said, contrasting the “crazy” world of social media with the real-world reception. His comeback coincided with minimal playing time but significant personal growth.

Reflecting on the season, Araujo insisted he had no regrets despite limited minutes. “Even though I haven’t played as many minutes, this has been the season in which I’ve learned the most. I’ve grown enormously mentally.” He emphasized lessons in perspective, family, and personal balance.

He appealed for empathy toward players’ mental health. “People think that because we’re footballers and earn a lot of money, we don’t have worries. But we do. Many things happen in the football world, and they build up, creating stress.”

On his future at Barcelona, Araujo reaffirmed his commitment. “I feel very good in Barcelona. I’m very happy here. I’m not afraid of facing anyone because I have great confidence in myself.”

He concluded with optimism about his remaining years. “I believe my best years are still ahead of me, and I’ll face them with renewed maturity,” he said.
