Rui Borges laments Sporting CP’s Taça de Portugal loss
Sporting CP suffered a shock defeat in the Taça de Portugal final against Torreense. Manager Rui Borges described the result as “a feeling of great sadness for us.”
Borges spoke to RTP after the 1-0 loss at Estádio Nacional. The result marked Sporting CP’s second consecutive domestic cup final defeat.
Torreense claimed their first-ever Taça de Portugal title with the solitary goal. Sporting CP had won the league earlier this season under Borges’ guidance.
The defeat extends Sporting CP’s trophy drought to two years. Borges has now lost two finals as manager of the Lisbon club.
The match saw Torreense dominate possession with 58%. Sporting CP’s best chance came from Pedro Gonçalves in the 22nd minute, which was saved by Torreense goalkeeper Ricardo.
Borges will now focus on the remaining league fixtures. Sporting CP sit top of the Liga Portugal table with two games left.
