Manchester United pays 19.3M euros for Rúben Amorim exit
Manchester United confirmed a €19.3 million payment to Sporting CP for Rúben Amorim and his technical staff.
The compensation covers Amorim’s release clause and associated coaching team fees. United terminated negotiations with Sporting CP on February 19, 2024.
Sporting CP received the full amount in a single transaction. The club had previously set Amorim’s release clause at €10 million but increased it to €19.3 million to finalize the agreement.
Amorim’s departure leaves Sporting CP without a head coach days before their Europa League tie against FC Barcelona. The club now faces an interim period under assistant coach Armando Evangelista.
Sporting CP’s board defended the increased compensation as necessary to secure the manager’s exit. United completed the payment within 48 hours of finalizing terms.
Amorim is expected to join Manchester United within the next 10 days pending work permit approval.
