Tony Mowbray Returns to Blackburn After Cancer Recovery

2 uur geleden
Tony Mowbray has been re‑appointed as Blackburn Rovers manager on a long‑term contract. The appointment returns him to Ewood Park four years after his first five‑year spell. He left his post at Birmingham City after being diagnosed with cancer. Mowbray was diagnosed with bowel cancer in February 2024. He underwent major operations, chemotherapy and a stay at Christie Hospital in Manchester. He quit Birmingham City to focus on treatment and now feels re‑energised after receiving the all‑clear. In a BBC Radio Lancashire interview, Mowbray said he feels “blessed, honoured and proud” to return to Blackburn Rovers. He cited his wife, three children and a lifelong career that includes spells at West Brom, Hibs, Celtic, Middlesbrough, Coventry and Sunderland as sources of motivation. At 62, he stated he is not ready to retire and will confront future pressure head‑on. Blackburn Rovers finished 20th in the Championship last season and were the second‑lowest scorers with 42 goals. Mowbray, who guided the club to eighth in his final season, believes he can increase goal‑scoring by getting more players into the box. He praised the sporting director and acknowledged fans’ frustration with owners Venky’s.
