Andoni Iraola targets Alessandro Bastoni for Liverpool defence
Andoni Iraola has identified Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni as a primary target for Liverpool’s defensive rebuild. The report says the 27‑year‑old Italy international is being linked with a move to the Premier League.
Iraola’s tactical blueprint favours physically strong, technically adept centre‑backs who can launch attacks from deep, a profile that matches Bastoni’s attributes. Bastoni combines physical presence with the ability to carry the ball forward and break opposition lines with his passing.
At Inter Milan, Bastoni has accumulated close to 300 appearances since joining for around £27 million after graduating from the Atalanta academy. During his tenure he has helped Inter secure three Serie A titles and reach two Champions League finals that ended as runners‑up.
Internationally, Bastoni was part of Italy’s Euro 2020 winning squad and has earned more than 40 senior caps. He has expressed interest in testing himself in the Premier League, which he views as the ultimate test.
Inter Milan consider Bastoni a cornerstone of their project and have indicated that any transfer would require a fee exceeding £70 million. The club’s negotiating position is reinforced by his long‑standing connection with the Nerazzurri dressing room.
Liverpool’s interest aligns with Iraola’s emphasis on defenders who defend aggressively while contributing significantly in possession phases. The manager has stressed that his squad must earn the right to belong at Anfield.
Speaking after his arrival at Anfield, Iraola told the players, “For me, you’re all new signings,” and added that he wants to “earn the right to belong.” He presented his vision as a statement of intent for the club’s future.
Whether Liverpool can meet Inter’s financial demands and secure Bastoni’s signature remains uncertain, but the defender’s name is expected to dominate the transfer window as Iraola shapes his squad.
