Atlético Madrid rejects Barcelona, eyes Arsenal swap Álvarez
Atlético Madrid have ruled out any sale of Julián Álvarez to Barcelona and are instead negotiating a swap‑plus‑cash deal with Arsenal that would see Viktor Gyökeres move to Madrid together with a cash payment estimated between €40 million and €60 million this season.
The COPE report, attributed to collaborator Manolo Lama, says Atlético Madrid are pursuing a swap‑plus‑cash structure with Arsenal for Julián Álvarez. The club has categorically ruled out selling Álvarez to Barcelona and would rather keep him on the bench than accept terms it deems unfavourable, demanding Viktor Gyökeres plus a cash payment of €40‑60 million.
Earlier coverage on Football Espana quoted El Chiringuito’s Jota Jordi claiming that Atlético had reached a closed agreement to sell Álvarez to Arsenal for around €50 million plus Gyökeres. The COPE story does not confirm that the deal is final but it corroborates the general shape of the proposal being explored between the two clubs.
Arsenal signed Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP last summer for approximately €70 million including variables. Transfermarkt currently values Gyökeres at about €65 million, meaning the proposed package of Gyökeres plus up to €60 million in cash amounts to a theoretical value of €115‑125 million.
Earlier in the summer Real Madrid were reported to have offered a structure worth €150 million for Álvarez. Álvarez’s contract at the Metropolitano includes a release clause of €500 million, far above the figures being discussed.
Atlético’s logic is to avoid a pure‑cash sale that could appear desperate while simultaneously filling a centre‑forward need. Viktor Gyökeres’s physical, direct style is described as a natural fit for Diego Simeone’s system, and Alexander Sørloth would become surplus in that scenario.
For Arsenal, the deal would require a significant cash outlay on top of Gyökeres, who netted 21 goals in his debut season at the Emirates. The move would also represent a reversal of the statement of intent made by Mikel Arteta’s recruitment team when they signed Gyökeres last summer.
TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey has explicitly pushed back on the notion that an agreement is in place, describing the Gyökeres‑plus‑cash scenario as unlikely while confirming that communications between the clubs remain active. A prior report from Gil Marín’s office said the Atlético chief executive personally phoned Joan Laporta to say Álvarez was not for sale, consistent with a strategy of closing the Barcelona route while opening an alternative.
