Celtic confirms Martin O'Neill as permanent manager

Celtic's hierarchy expressed delight after confirming Martin O'Neill as permanent first‑team manager. O'Neill, 74, had previously led the side to a Scottish Premiership title and a Scottish Cup win during two interim spells last term. Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham assisted O'Neill last campaign, but the club's statement omitted any reference to them as agreements are still pending. Principal shareholder Dermot Desmond said O'Neill has repeatedly shown his qualities, knows what the club means to him and is the outstanding candidate to achieve the club’s objectives. Desmond added that the club will fully support O'Neill across the close season to prepare for domestic success and European competition. Desmond had previously worked with O'Neill during his first spell at Celtic in the early 2000s. Interim chairman Brian Wilson welcomed O'Neill’s re‑appointment, citing the leadership, inspiration and success delivered last season and the platform created for the upcoming campaign. Wilson said the busy summer will see the club positioned to compete with O'Neill back at the helm. Chief executive Michael Nicholson stated the club is pleased to retain O'Neill, noting his knowledge and experience were vital last season and will be crucial going forward. Nicholson emphasized confidence in O'Neill to drive the team through the next period and meet the challenges ahead.
