Cristian Romero says he wants to stay at Tottenham Hotspur

Cristian Romero has told Tottenham Hotspur executives that he wants to remain at the North London club and help drive its revival. Romero, who made 23 Premier League appearances and scored four goals last season, said he has “unfinished business in North London”.

Tottenham flirted dangerously with relegation before surviving “by the skin of their teeth on the final day”. The campaign highlighted the need for stability, authority and players who understand the weight of the shirt, a point emphasized by manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Despite debate over his discipline and availability, Romero remains one of the few squad members with genuine elite‑level presence. At his best he provides aggression, front‑foot defending and a competitive edge, while at his worst disciplinary issues and absences leave the side exposed.

Romero’s commitment is tied to “assurances over the club’s direction”, including recruitment plans and a long‑term vision. De Zerbi’s football demands brave centre backs, technical clarity and emotional intelligence, qualities Romero can fit if surrounded by the right profiles.

Manchester United, Brentford and Crystal Palace are monitoring Romero’s situation, underscoring his continued admiration across the Premier League. Nevertheless, Romero’s “preference is to remain with Spurs”.

Romero declared he “wants to stay, he wants to compete, and he wants to help drag Spurs back towards the upper reaches of the Premier League.” If he embraces the required standards, his decision could provide De Zerbi with a defensive pillar for the summer rebuild.
