Djed Spence to Wear Face Mask at World Cup
Djed Spence will wear a face mask at the World Cup. The Tottenham Hotspur defender was named in England's 26‑man squad for the tournament.
Spence suffered a broken jaw in Tottenham's 2‑1 Premier League loss to Chelsea after Liam Delap's left arm struck his face. He completed that match and later wore a mask in the 1‑0 win over Everton.
Spence started in England's 1‑0 warm‑up victory over New Zealand at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. His left‑foot delivery set up Harry Kane's header for the winner. He earned his first senior cap after Thomas Tuchel took over as England head coach in January 2025. He could add a sixth cap against Costa Rica.
The mask will remain until his jaw heals, a process expected to take three months. England's World Cup campaign opens on June 17 against Croatia.
