Don Garber invites Mohamed Salah to MLS after Liverpool exit

At the SBJ Business of Soccer event in March, MLS commissioner Don Garber publicly declared his desire to see 34‑year‑old Mohamed Salah join Major League Soccer, noting that the Egyptian forward will become a free agent when his Liverpool contract expires at the end of June.

Mohamed Salah has spent the bulk of his career at Liverpool, becoming an emblem of consistency and elite conditioning. With his contract set to expire at the end of June, the 34‑year‑old forward will enter free agency.

Don Garber said, “I couldn’t say that until he announced that he was leaving Liverpool, but what a great player he would be in MLS.” He added, “And I think we would provide him with a great platform.”

Garber told reporters, “If he ever decides to come to Major League Soccer, we’d welcome him with open arms.” He continued, “I’d say he should reach out to Leo (Messi) and reach out to Thomas Muller and see how happy they’ve been and how successful they’ve been and how much they’ve really embraced being in Major League Soccer.”

The league’s commercial gravity was altered when Lionel Messi joined MLS, Salah’s global appeal from Anfield to Cairo could similarly expand MLS’s audience.

Europe is expected to show interest, and Saudi Arabia will watch closely, as Salah evaluates his options. His performances in the Premier League have built a worldwide market that could translate to MLS.

Garber’s invitation makes MLS a clear contender in Salah’s next career decision. The ultimate choice will determine whether the Egyptian star views America as the right stage for his next act.
