Enzo Maresca likely to name Ruben Dias as Manchester City captain

Manchester City’s incoming manager Enzo Maresca is expected to appoint centre‑back Ruben Dias as the club’s next captain following Bernardo Silva’s summer exit to Real Madrid, with the decision likely to be announced in the coming weeks at the Etihad Stadium.

Among the names reportedly under consideration are Ruben Dias, Rodri and Erling Haaland, with Dias seen as the frontrunner because of his unofficial ranking within the leadership group last season.

Pep Guardiola personally selected the captain ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, breaking the traditional squad vote that had previously determined the role.

Bernardo Silva had been appointed captain after the departures of Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne, forming a leadership core with centre‑back Ruben Dias, striker Erling Haaland and midfield star Rodri.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, Pete O’Rourke said, “There’s probably a big likelihood he will be captain now Bernardo Silva has moved. He’s obviously been captain before, so it’ll be interesting to see if he gets the armband under Maresca, or somebody else? Maresca wants to keep hold of the Portuguese international, especially with John Stones leaving the club. He will be keen to maintain some continuity in defence.”

Maresca is keen to retain Dias, especially as John Stones is set to leave, while Real Madrid are reported to be weighing a potential move for the Portuguese international.

José Mourinho, newly appointed at Real Madrid, has placed the 29‑year‑old compatriot on a short list of central‑defensive targets, intensifying speculation about a summer transfer.

Dias remains under a long‑term contract with Manchester City until June 2029, giving the club leverage as it seeks to keep its defensive anchor ahead of the new managerial era.
