Everton ordered to pay Burnley nearly £40m

Everton have been ordered to pay Burnley nearly £40 million after losing a legal dispute over profit and sustainability rule breaches. The ruling follows Everton’s initial 10‑point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s PSR in the 2021/22 season. Everton’s 10‑point penalty was reduced to six points on appeal during the 2023/24 campaign. A further two‑point deduction was imposed for additional breaches. Burnley, who finished 18th and were relegated to the Championship in 2021/22, sued Everton claiming the points loss caused their drop. The court awarded Burnley compensation and interest, described as a record‑breaking amount. Everton avoided relegation that season, finishing four points above the drop zone under manager Frank Lampard. Football finance expert Stefan Borson said the decision has "massive implications" and called the £40 million figure "very high". He added he does not expect the ruling to affect Everton’s transfer‑market spending this summer.
