Hansi Flick targets more pressing and depth for Barcelona 2026/27

Barcelona have dominated Spanish football in recent years, securing two league titles and missing only the Copa del Rey in the 2025/26 season. Hansi Flick, the German manager, is shaping his 2026/27 plan around increased pressing, running, and aggression to compete with Europe’s elite. Flick’s arrival instantly made Barcelona the strongest side in Spain, a claim supported by their recent domestic sweep. He believes that adding intensity off the ball will bridge the gap in the Champions League. Flick and his coaching staff argue that the current squad already has sufficient technical quality to dominate domestically. However, they stress the need for more physical power, depth, and a higher level of intensity when the ball is lost. The signing of English winger Anthony Gordon illustrates the new direction. Gordon brings energy, pressing, and direct running, and is regarded as one of the best off‑ball attackers in Europe. Julian Alvarez is also identified as a priority target for the forward line. Alvarez’s style includes pressing, harassing defenders, attacking space, and providing a defensive bite that prevents a passive attack. Flick insists Barcelona must retain their DNA of possession, positional play, and technical superiority while adding the required aggression. He warns that a weak first press would stretch the midfield and force the defence to cover larger areas. The balance between beauty and bite will determine whether Barcelona can translate domestic dominance into European success. It remains to be seen if the squad will meet Flick’s heightened expectations next season.
