Ian McCall calls Derek McInnes a ‘control freak’ for Rangers
Ian McCall described new Rangers manager Derek McInnes as a “total control freak” who will be “hands on” after his appointment at Ibrox this week, following Danny Rohl’s move to Red Bull Salzburg. The role marks McInnes’ sixth club as a manager.
Speaking to BBC Sportsound, Ian McCall said, “Derek McInnes, I think, as the new manager - I hope he doesn't mind me saying - is a total control freak.” He added, “He wants his hands on everything.”
McCall argued that McInnes’ hands‑on style matches what Rangers need, noting his willingness to sign players and his strong signing record. He said the manager will not be scared of making bold recruitment decisions.
Former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday, who played for the club from 2015 to 2020 before moving to Hearts, said further significant change is required at Ibrox this summer. Halliday warned that the squad still has glaring holes.
Halliday observed that recruitment will be interesting and that the club has much work to do, but he believes Rangers are already stronger after signing Lawrence Shankland and appointing McInnes, both from Hearts. He called Shankland the best striker in the country.
According to Halliday, the addition of Shankland gives Rangers a stronger edge than if Danny Rohl had been appointed. He said the appointment is almost ten years in the making and that McInnes knows the club well.
Halliday highlighted that McInnes lives in Scotland, has long‑standing links with Rangers, and therefore knows what the club is about, calling the appointment a positive move for both parties. He concluded that Rangers are in a stronger position heading into next season.
