Ipswich appoint Gary O'Neil as manager until 2029

🇬🇧 yesterday

Ipswich Town have confirmed the appointment of Gary O'Neil as their new first-team manager. The 43-year-old arrives at Portman Road with a four-year contract running until 2029. Ipswich returned to the Premier League last season after a single year away. Kieran McKenna left the club during the summer after guiding the Tractor Boys back to the top flight.

O'Neil’s most recent role was as manager of French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. He spent one season in charge at the Stade de la Meinau, finishing 12th in the 2023-24 campaign. The former midfielder previously managed Bournemouth in the Premier League during the 2022-23 season.

The appointment marks O'Neil’s first permanent managerial position in English football. He replaces McKenna, who departed after three years in charge of Ipswich. McKenna led the club to promotion via the Championship play-offs in May 2024.

Ipswich’s hierarchy highlighted O'Neil’s leadership during his time at Strasbourg. Club officials stated the French experience provided valuable insight ahead of the Premier League return.
