Jurgen Klopp backs Florian Wirtz after mixed debut

Jurgen Klopp says Florian Wirtz has everything needed to become a standout player for Liverpool, despite a mixed first season. The former manager’s endorsement underscores his belief in the German midfielder’s future. Florian Wirtz arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2025 for a transfer fee reported in excess of £100 million. The club and supporters viewed him as a cornerstone of Liverpool’s long‑term plans. His debut campaign combined flashes of brilliance with periods of frustration, drawing scrutiny from fans and pundits alike. The inconsistency sparked debate over his impact at Anfield. Liverpool faced Burnley in a Premier League match at Anfield on 17 January 2026, with Florian Wirtz and Maxime Esteve featuring for their sides. The encounter highlighted Wirtz’s involvement in a high‑profile fixture. Across all competitions in the 2025/26 season, Wirtz made 49 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing ten assists. In the Premier League alone he recorded five goals and four assists. Injuries disrupted his rhythm at key moments, and questions arose about whether his goal and assist output justified his transfer fee. The setbacks contributed to the mixed assessment of his season. Klopp emphasized attributes over raw numbers, praising Wirtz’s technical ability, intelligence in possession and capacity to unlock compact defences. Those qualities, he said, are why Liverpool invested heavily. Coaching staff also highlighted his movement between the lines, pressing intensity and ability to create space for teammates. Such contributions are valued beyond simple statistics. At 23, Wirtz is entering a development stage, with elite midfielders typically peaking between 25 and 28. Liverpool remain optimistic that his best football lies ahead. Looking ahead to his second season, Klopp expects a more decisive influence as the adjustment period passes. He believes the underlying talent remains undeniable and that confidence in Wirtz is justified.
