Liverpool eye Gonçalo Inácio and Murillo as Konaté replacements
Liverpool are preparing for the departure of French international Ibrahima Konaté when his contract expires after five years at Anfield. The club must find a replacement for one of the Premier League’s most imposing centre‑backs. Several defenders are already under review.
Sporting CP defender Gonçalo Inácio is a leading candidate. He is comfortable in possession, progressive with his passing and capable of operating in a high defensive line. His left‑footed profile adds balance to the back line.
Sam Beukema is linked with Liverpool and would bring experience, consistency and tactical awareness. Luka Vušković is described as a longer‑term project with considerable potential. Nottingham Forest centre‑back Murillo has impressed in the Premier League and offers physicality, composure and ball‑playing ability.
Finding an elite centre‑back is increasingly difficult, and Liverpool cannot afford a short‑term fix. Any incoming defender must possess technical ability to build attacks, athleticism to defend large spaces and the mentality to thrive under pressure. The recruitment team faces one of its biggest challenges this summer.
Virgil van Dijk remains an elite performer, but succession planning cannot be delayed indefinitely. Liverpool hope to act decisively to secure a cornerstone of the defence for the next five to seven years. The club’s defensive future is now a priority.
