Lucas Bergvall tells Tottenham he wants to leave this summer

Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall has told Tottenham Hotspur that he wishes to depart the club this summer, despite being under contract until 2031, after a season in which he was named Tottenham’s Player of the Year and helped lift the 2025 Europa League trophy. Bergvall arrived at Tottenham from Swedish side Djurgarden in 2024 and quickly became one of the club’s brightest young talents. He featured prominently under manager Ange Postecoglou during his debut season in north London. His standing in the squad has waned after successive managerial changes. Thomas Frank often deployed him in wider areas, while Igor Tudor limited his opportunities during his brief tenure. Under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi, Bergvall started a match but failed to secure a regular place before the season’s end. Bergvall prefers playing as a number eight, a role that does not naturally align with De Zerbi’s tactical system. Tottenham’s transfer targets include midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, indicating further competition for places. Premier League clubs and other major European teams have monitored Bergvall’s situation, with earlier approaches rejected by Tottenham during the winter window. The club’s resistance may be tested now that the midfielder has expressed a desire to leave. Internationally, Bergvall became Sweden’s youngest player to appear at a World Cup and recorded an assist in the opening victory over Tunisia. His rising profile adds pressure on Tottenham to decide his future in the coming weeks.
