Manchester City inquire about Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto
Manchester City have made an enquiry about Chelsea defender Malo Gusto. Gusto previously worked with incoming City manager Enzo Maresca at Chelsea, which may influence the interest.
The 23‑year‑old provided cover for Reece James, recording three goals and five assists in 49 appearances. He showed defensive solidity in one‑on‑one situations, though he was vulnerable when covering the back post. Maresca helped him improve his inverted role, and Gusto executed the required tasks effectively.
City are seeking a specialist right‑back as Rico Lewis struggles for form. Pep Guardiola previously converted Matheus Nunes, a natural midfielder, into a right‑back, but the club still desire a dedicated player familiar with Maresca’s tactics. After an unproductive pursuit of Newcastle United’s Valentino Livramento, the focus shifted to Gusto.
Chelsea would consider it unwise to let Gusto leave despite a poor 2025/26 season. Under Xabi Alonso’s guidance he could rebound, while Reece James cannot be relied on to stay fit for a full campaign. Cucurella’s potential departure already threatens Chelsea’s full‑back depth, making Gusto’s retention a priority.
Chelsea are expected to negotiate a new contract to secure Gusto. City’s interest remains, but the outcome will depend on the Blues’ offer and Gusto’s willingness.
