Manchester United must decide whether to reinforce right‑back or left‑back
On the latest BBC Manchester podcast, Gaz Drinkwater and Joe McGrath debated which defensive area Manchester United should prioritise in the summer transfer window ahead of the 2026‑27 campaign for Michael Carrick's side. McGrath flagged right‑back Noussair Mazraoui, who featured in 21 games last season, while Drinkwater argued the club must shore up left‑back to give Luke Shaw regular rest as United prepares for a busier schedule that includes Champions League football.
McGrath said, “Noussair Mazraoui hasn't come into his own at United. That right‑back position is up there with one of the priorities.” He highlighted that Mazraoui’s limited impact across 21 appearances leaves the right side of defence unsettled.
Drinkwater countered that the left‑back slot requires reinforcement to allow Luke Shaw to be rested for some games. He noted United’s upcoming Champions League qualification will increase the number of matches, intensifying the need for squad depth.
Drinkwater added, “I agree that Shaw is better than Dalot, but Dalot is always available. We are going to play Champions League football next season, and I don't trust Luke Shaw to do it all season.” He emphasised that while Dalot can cover, the club cannot rely on him alone for a full campaign.
The podcast also mentioned a potential move for Newcastle’s Lewis Hall to Old Trafford. Drinkwater argued that even if Hall arrives, he would not start him over Shaw at left‑back unless both are fit.
He concluded, “If they're both fit and available, do I start Hall over Shaw? No, I don't. You're going to have to spend a lot of money on Lewis Hall.” The comment underscores the expectation that United will need to invest heavily in defensive options.
