Marc Cucurella joins Real Madrid for €55m, Gavi surprised
Barcelona midfielder Gavi said the Spanish national team was caught off guard when Marc Cucurella completed his €55 million move to Real Madrid, a deal sealed with an extra €5 million in performance bonuses and a contract running to 2032 during the World Cup preparations.
Cucurella had been linked with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in recent months, but Real Madrid moved decisively to secure his signature before their rivals could mount a serious attempt. The Spanish left‑back had previously played for Chelsea before returning to La Liga.
The transfer fee was reported as €55 million plus €5 million in performance‑related bonuses. Cucurella signed a long‑term contract that runs until 2032, underscoring Real Madrid’s confidence in his future role.

Speaking to RAC1, Gavi revealed that most of the squad only learned of the move the day before, after training. He said, “We didn’t expect it and nobody knew; he kept it very quiet.” Gavi added that Lamine Yamal was teasing Cucurella, noting that the defender will now face his teammate in the upcoming Clasico. Yamal’s comments highlight the personal rivalry that will emerge between the two Spanish internationals. Gavi praised Cucurella’s qualities, describing him as physical and intense. He called the transfer a good signing for the Whites and said he was happy for his teammate. The speed of the transfer surprised many within the national team camp.
