Michael Owen Says Kylian Mbappé Is World’s Best Player

Michael Owen stated that Kylian Mbappé is the best player in the world. Owen added that the criticism surrounding Mbappé will fuel his performance for Les Bleus at the World Cup. Owen highlighted France’s attacking depth, naming Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé of Paris Saint‑Germain, Bradley Barcola and Michael Olise as quality options. He said the squad offers “so many options” in the forward line. Regarding Hugo Ekitike, Owen praised his work rate, finishing and pace during his first season at Liverpool. He noted that Ekitike’s injury would have limited his start, but his freshness could have made a big impact. Owen recalled Mbappé’s season of more than 40 goals and the perception that he was scapegoated for Real Madrid’s trophyless campaign. He asserted that Mbappé feels no pressure and will be further motivated at the World Cup. The third group match pits Mbappé against Erling Haaland, and Owen said Mbappé would definitely be in his world XI. He added that Haaland’s inclusion depends on formation, while Harry Kane also deserves a place. Owen pointed out Kane’s impressive form for Bayern Munich and mentioned Julián Alvarez as another contender for the tournament’s top scorer. He suggested that the leading scorers are likely to come from the strongest teams. Looking at emerging talent, Owen named Lamine Yamal as a breakout young star to watch. He warned that surprises are possible but expects France’s depth to dominate. When asked about his own 1998 World Cup goal versus Benjamin Pavard’s 2018 strike, Owen favored his own iconic goal. He concluded that France are favourites, with England, Spain and Germany also capable of strong performances.
