Newcastle United renew interest in Manchester City keeper James Trafford

Newcastle United have renewed interest in James Trafford, the Manchester City goalkeeper. Trafford is expected to depart Manchester City this summer. Gianluigi Donnarumma is projected to start as Manchester City’s first-choice goalkeeper next season. Enzo Maresca prefers keepers who contribute to the buildup, and he rates Trafford ahead of Donnarumma in that aspect. Trafford is described as a quality shot‑stopper still in the early stage of his career. Despite signing Ewan Jaouen from Reims, Newcastle United remain in the market for a number‑one goalkeeper. David Ornstein said Newcastle have contacted Manchester City about signing Trafford, but negotiations have not begun. Ornstein added that Trafford will wait until after the World Cup to decide his future. Eddie Howe’s side, after a disappointing 2025‑26 campaign and the departure of Anthony Gordon, aim to rebuild their squad. A transfer to Newcastle could give Trafford first‑choice status at St. James’ Park and enhance his chances of becoming England’s number‑one goalkeeper.
