Northampton Town sign defender James Maxwell on two-year deal
Northampton Town have secured the services of 24‑year‑old left‑back James Maxwell on a two‑year contract, with the move becoming official on 1 July after his release from Doncaster Rovers at the end of the previous season. He will become the Cobblers' third summer signing and adds depth to the defensive line.
Maxwell began his professional career with Rangers before moving to Queen of the South and Ayr United in Scotland. He joined Doncaster Rovers at the start of the 2022‑23 season.
During four seasons at the Eco‑Power Stadium, Maxwell made more than 100 appearances and scored four goals. He was part of the squad that secured the League Two title in 2024‑25.
Cobblers boss Chris Hogg said on the club website that Maxwell was “a solid defender who was aggressive and competitive, won his battles and loves to get forward.” He highlighted the player’s willingness to contribute offensively.
Hogg added that Maxwell was “really keen to come and be part of what we are looking to do here,” which stood out during their talks. Maxwell will join striker Harvey Saunders and goalkeeper Zach Jeacock at Sixfields for the new season.
All the deals were completed in June 2026, paving the way for the official transfer on 1 July. The club expects him to strengthen the back line.
