Real Madrid signs Bernardo Silva and Cucurella as Mourinho rebuilds defence
Real Madrid, newly guided by president Florentino Perez after his re‑election, have moved swiftly under manager Jose Mourinho, who signed a contract until 2029. The club confirmed the free transfer of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva from Manchester City and the €55 million plus €5 million add‑on signing of left‑back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, signalling an immediate defensive rebuild.
Mourinho travelled to Madrid last week and met general manager Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat at a city‑centre hotel, a meeting attended by super‑agent Jorge Mendes that accelerated recruitment activity. The discussion preceded the swift acquisition of Silva and Cucurella.
Right‑back Denzel Dumfries joined after Madrid triggered his €20 million release clause. His signing follows the departures of Dani Carvajal and David Alaba, further opening space in the back line.
Ibrahima Konate is reportedly close to completing a free transfer, while Mourinho’s shortlist for a centre‑back includes Ruben Dias, Nico Schlotterbeck and Alessandro Bastoni. These names underline the club’s aim to add physical authority and leadership to the defence.
Midfielders Ferland Mendy, Fran Garcia, Raul Asencio and Dani Ceballos are all listed as possible exits to reduce the squad to La Liga’s 25‑player limit. Ceballos is said to prefer a free move, whereas Mendy’s injury record complicates his transfer.
Despite securing Silva, Madrid remain interested in creative midfielders, with Enzo Fernandez valued at £120 million and AZ’s 20‑year‑old Kees Smit also linked to the club. Both players have expressed interest in joining a club that can offer Champions League football.
With the transfer window still open, Mourinho’s next moves will likely focus on completing the defensive overhaul and securing a final creative midfielder before the season begins. The club’s aggressive approach suggests further activity before the campaign’s start.
