Real Madrid turn to Mourinho as they hunt Serie A’s top defender

Real Madrid have turned to José Mourinho to rebuild their defence after a disappointing season. The Portuguese coach, who returns to the Santiago Bernabéu, will take charge of a side that has already splashed €55 million on Marc Cucurella from Chelsea and secured Ibrahim Konaté on a free transfer from Liverpool. Mourinho arrives with the task of restoring Real Madrid to the summit of Spanish and European football. His previous stint in Madrid yielded silverware, though that team featured Cristiano Ronaldo among its stars. Now, the club’s leading figures are Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior, who must realign under the new regime. The Portuguese signed a three-year contract, but time is not on his side in the Spanish capital. The pressure to deliver immediate results is already mounting, with the club having invested heavily in defensive reinforcements. Cucurella’s arrival from Chelsea for €55 million underscores the urgency in the backline. Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan has emerged as a prime target for Mourinho’s defensive reshuffle. The 27-year-old Italian international has been a consistent performer at Inter, making 298 appearances since joining from Atalanta in 2017 for just over €40 million. His contract runs until mid-2028, making him a long-term asset. Bastoni’s left-footed profile adds versatility to a potential partnership with Konaté, who is also left-footed. Transfermarkt currently values Bastoni at €65 million, though Inter Milan are expected to demand a higher fee given Real Madrid’s financial strength and Bastoni’s importance to their side. The Italian’s form at Inter has drawn attention from Europe’s elite, but Madrid’s interest signals a shift in their defensive strategy. With Mourinho at the helm, the club is prioritising defensive solidity to complement their attacking talent. Bastoni’s inclusion would address a key area of need for Real Madrid, who have struggled with consistency at the back in recent campaigns. His ability to play in a back three or four further enhances his appeal to Mourinho’s system.
