Shrewsbury Town close to US consortium sale after test

BBC Radio Shropshire confirmed that Shrewsbury Town have agreed the terms of a takeover with an American consortium. The club submitted the required paperwork to the English Football League and the new Independent Football Regulator this week.

The club first disclosed in April that it was negotiating with a US‑based group over a possible sale. At that time, several other interested parties were also reported.

Long‑serving owner Roland Wycherley has been seeking a buyer since September 2024, after a series of prospective deals collapsed over the previous twelve months. Negotiations with one American prospect ended in March 2025, a second bid fell apart six months later, and despite renewed interest in November, no concrete agreement materialised until now.

On the pitch, Shrewsbury Town recovered from a season that saw them flirt with relegation to finish 19th, ten points clear of the drop zone under new manager Gavin Cowan. Cowan secured a new two‑year contract at the end of the campaign.

BBC Radio Shropshire sports editor Nick Southall described the progress as the furthest the club has reached in its ownership search, but cautioned that the deal is not imminent. He added that Wycherley continues to fund the club and that no buyer can exert influence until the takeover is fully completed.
