Steve Howey backs Ewen Jaouen as Newcastle signing
Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey says goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen could be a very good signing for Eddie Howe’s side. He welcomed the rapid completion of the transfer.
Newcastle United paid around £18.5m to bring the 20‑year‑old Jaouen to St James’ Park, despite his lack of top‑flight experience. Howey noted that opinions differ on Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope, but Jaouen is well regarded for a young keeper.
Howey added that big‑name keepers have sometimes bombed in the Premier League, recalling Peter Schmeichel’s early struggles before becoming one of the league’s best alongside David Seaman. He said the fee could prove worthwhile if Jaouen performs.
Howey suggested Newcastle may have an edge over reported interest from Chelsea and Real Madrid by offering Jaouen immediate first‑team opportunities. He argued a player would prefer a club where he can feature rather than waiting at another side.
