Sunderland chase Red Bull Leipzig full-back Lutsharel Geertruida

Journalist Philip Hinze reported on X that Sunderland have re-entered the race to sign Red Bull Leipzig full-back Lutsharel Geertruida permanently this summer. The Black Cats will face competition from other Premier League, Serie A and La Liga clubs for the Dutch defender. Geertruida made 31 appearances for Sunderland last season, featuring regularly in the Premier League. He did not record a goal or an assist during those matches. His contract with RB Leipzig runs until the summer of 2029, meaning Sunderland are unlikely to obtain him on a reduced fee. Dean Mouhtaropoulos photographed Geertruida during an international friendly between the Netherlands and Ecuador at Philips Stadion. Primarily a right-back, Geertruida can also operate as a centre-back and is noted for solid tackles and accurate passing inside his own half. He still needs to increase his goal and assist contributions. Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris could add depth and quality to his defence with Geertruida’s arrival. Le Bris is expected to intensify efforts to secure the player before the transfer window closes.
