Tottenham Hotspur Sign Andy Robertson as Defensive Reset Begins

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson from Liverpool. The left-back will join the club after the end of June, ending a nine‑year spell at Anfield. Robertson arrives with a record of league titles and European experience. At 32, he is positioned as a corrective measure rather than a long‑term project. Tottenham conceded 56 Premier League goals in 2025‑26, the fourth‑worst total in the division. Destiny Udogie’s injury‑limited 45 appearances and Djed Spence’s right‑footed cover highlighted the need for a natural left‑back. Marcos Senesi is expected to sign a four‑year contract, giving manager Roberto De Zerbi another left‑sided centre‑back alongside Micky van de Ven. An official offer for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke has been submitted, though it reportedly fell short of Brighton’s valuation. Cristian Romero’s future remains uncertain as he participates in the World Cup, and his possible departure would be seismic for the defence. Tottenham aim to secure a replacement before the market moves against them. In midfield, Joao Palhinha is a serious option after a loan spell from Bayern Munich that produced five league goals. Hayden Hackney is admired, though his preference is believed to be Everton, leaving Tottenham to search elsewhere for midfield energy. Outgoings include Guglielmo Vicario, Richarlison, Radu Dragusin, Yves Bissouma and Ben Davies, all facing varying degrees of uncertainty. Will Lankshear, who scored 11 goals in 44 appearances on loan at Oxford United, could still force his way into De Zerbi’s plans. De Zerbi’s approach now appears coherent, with Robertson, Senesi and potentially van Hecke providing the technical security required for a possession‑based style. The defensive rebuild sets a foundation before the club turns its attention to attacking reinforcement.
