€1 billion barrier: Real Madrid block United’s Tchouameni bid

🇪🇸

A €1 billion release clause underpins Aurelien Tchouameni’s stay at Real Madrid, where the 26‑year‑old is contracted until 2028. Manchester United have identified the French midfielder as their prime target to replace Casemiro, but the Spanish giants say he is not for sale.

Manchester United have monitored the French midfielder for some time as they search for a new defensive anchor. Uncertainty also surrounds Manuel Ugarte’s future, adding pressure on United to find a replacement. Tchouameni arrived from AS Monaco in 2022 and has gradually established himself as a key figure at Real Madrid.

Real Madrid have told United that they are not interested in negotiating for Tchouameni, who remains under contract until 2028 with a €1 billion release clause. The club would only consider a sale if the player himself requested to leave, and even then would demand a fee of at least €120 million.

New Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho views Tchouameni as an important part of his plans. Mourinho’s intention to build his midfield around the Frenchman further reduces the likelihood of a transfer.

Tchouameni is already among Real Madrid’s highest earners, receiving around €15.5 million per year including bonuses. This salary underscores the financial commitment the club has made to retain him.

Rather than preparing for a departure, Real Madrid are believed to be working on extending Tchouameni’s contract. Initial discussions have reportedly begun on a new deal that would keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2031 with an improved salary.

The €1 billion release clause and €15.5 million salary illustrate the financial barriers clubs face when targeting top midfield talent in today’s market. Manchester United’s pursuit of Tchouameni therefore highlights the increasing difficulty of securing high‑profile players without meeting substantial financial demands.
