Aaron Ramsey in advanced talks to become Oxford United head coach
Aaron Ramsey is in advanced talks to become the new head coach of Oxford United. The former Arsenal midfielder would take his first major step into management if the move is completed. Oxford United sacked Matt Bloomfield at the weekend after his side were relegated to League One. Bloomfield was appointed in January 2026 and managed only 11 league games without a win during his tenure.
Ramsey’s managerial ambitions align with his recent comments about transitioning into coaching. He confirmed in April that coaching was his intended path following his retirement from playing. His brief interim spell at Cardiff City, where he managed three games without a win, reinforced his desire to pursue a permanent coaching role.
The Wales national team job has also been linked with Ramsey should Craig Bellamy leave to join Burnley. However, the 35-year-old is believed to prefer starting his managerial career in club football rather than taking a national-team position immediately. Ramsey’s preference for club football was reiterated in recent remarks about his long-term ambitions.
Ramsey played 369 times for Arsenal, but his career trajectory changed after a severe leg injury in February 2010. A tackle by Ryan Shawcross at the Britannia Stadium resulted in a double fracture of his right tibia and fibula, requiring emergency surgery and a lengthy recovery. He spent nearly a year out before returning to elite football, though his injury pattern persisted.
Oxford United’s need for a new head coach after relegation to League One provides Ramsey with an opportunity to begin his managerial journey. The club’s reset under new leadership could offer the platform he seeks to establish himself in management. Ramsey’s potential appointment would mark a significant transition from his playing career to his coaching aspirations.
Ramsey admitted that managing Arsenal or Wales would be his dream roles in management. Speaking via The S*n, he stated, “That would be the dream. I know there is a long way to go before then. It’s time to go into coaching now. 100 per cent.” His interim role at Cardiff City further solidified his commitment to coaching as his next career step.
The former Juventus midfielder has been keeping himself involved in coaching through work with the Wales set-up and Cardiff City’s under-18 team. His exposure to coaching at both national and youth levels has prepared him for a senior managerial role. Ramsey’s managerial talks with Oxford United represent a pivotal moment in his post-playing career.
