Ajax lose Dolberg: knee injury keeps striker out for a long time

Ajax confirmed on Tuesday that striker Kasper Dolberg suffered a knee injury during a training session with the Danish national team. The club posted the announcement on X. The Danish FA reported that the injury will sideline him ‘for an extended period’. This season Dolberg has scored three times and provided three assists in nine matches.

Injury and immediate consequences

The injury was diagnosed during the Danish national team’s training session, after which Dolberg left the squad. The team is preparing for the Nations League, but now has to continue without the 28‑year‑old forward. The Danish FA emphasized on X that the recovery period is unclear, but will be longer.

Denmark, which missed the World Cup last summer, kicks off on Thursday with an away match against Norway in the Nations League. It is also placed in Group A alongside Wales and Portugal. These matches constitute the first stage of their Nations League campaign.

Dolberg’s role at Ajax

Dolberg began his second spell at Ajax a year ago, where he has been in form over the past months. With three goals and three assists in nine games he has recently kept Marcos Leonardo on the bench. His absence leaves a void in the attack.

On the same day right‑back Anton Gaaei was called up to the Danish national team. He replaces Alexander Bah of Benfica, who will miss the upcoming matches due to a shoulder injury. Gaaei thus gains his first international experience.

Dolberg returns injured to Amsterdam, where he will receive treatment at Ajax. The photo of his return was taken by Pro Shots and photographer Stanley Gontha.

The contrast between Dolberg’s recent form and the long absence highlights the vulnerability of Ajax’s attack. The club now has to look for alternatives as Denmark’s Nations League campaign gets underway.
