Ajax's free‑transfer gamble on Dani Ceballos amid Betis salary row

🇳🇱

Ajax are reportedly poised to secure Dani Ceballos, the 29‑year‑old Spanish midfielder, on a free transfer after his contract with Real Betis expired, with the Dutch club still holding hope despite the player's recent cryptic Instagram story and a salary offer that would halve his former €5 million net earnings at Real Madrid.

Ceballos has expressed a desire to return to Sevilla after nine years away, but Real Betis is unwilling to place him at the top of its salary structure. The club has proposed a wage lower than that of teammates Isco and Antony, amounting to roughly €2.5 million net per season, half of the €5 million he earned at Real Madrid.

The midfielder hinted at growing frustration in an Instagram story that read, “Who loves you finds a way. Who doesn’t loves you finds an excuse. So simple.” The post was interpreted as criticism of Betis’ management and a sign that negotiations may be faltering.

Ajax remain interested because Ceballos is a 13‑time international with a reputation as a creative playmaker, offering a rare free‑transfer opportunity to bolster their midfield. The Dutch side sees his experience and technical ability as a valuable addition without a transfer fee.

Besides Ajax, Villarreal and an unnamed Turkish top‑flight club have also shown interest now that Ceballos is free of contractual ties. Their pursuit underscores the market demand for a midfielder of his calibre.

A transfer to Ajax would resolve Ceballos’ salary impasse, while Ajax would secure a high‑profile midfielder at no cost. Ceballos is currently a free agent after his Betis contract ended. More clarity on his destination is expected this week.
