Alan Shearer says Liverpool's right‑wing signing is only a matter of time

Former England striker Alan Shearer told the Liverpool Echo that the club’s search for a new right‑winger will be resolved this summer, after Mohamed Salah’s departure at the end of the 2025/26 season leaves a glaring vacancy on the flank. Liverpool are entering one of the most important summers in recent memory. Years of stability have given way to a period of rebuilding, and the scale of the task facing Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola is evident. Alan Shearer told the Liverpool Echo that “Liverpool need several players, I think, if they want to compete again at the very top, and certainly in wide positions they’re going to have to strengthen.” He emphasised that the right flank, long occupied by Mohamed Salah, must be reinforced promptly. Shearer added, “I’m not surprised with who they’re being linked with like Diomande and Barcola. I guess it’s only a matter of time before that would be the position that they announce.” The names refer to Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola, both attracting interest from Liverpool. Federico Chiesa remains the only natural senior option available for the right‑wing role, though his limited opportunities make him a risky replacement for Salah’s extraordinary influence. Recruitment therefore becomes essential rather than optional, according to Shearer’s analysis. A versatile defender capable of operating across the entire back line would provide much‑needed security, while a dominant number six could transform Liverpool’s midfield balance. Allowing Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister to operate further forward would increase creativity and energy in attacking phases. Shearer concluded that a statement signing on the right wing is only a matter of time and that everything points toward a move arriving sooner rather than later. For a club with ambitions of returning to the summit, hesitation is no longer an option.
