Alonso’s debut at Cobham sparks honour and fresh challenges
On Thursday, Xabi Alonso stepped onto Chelsea’s Cobham training ground for his first day as the new Blues manager, signing in and instantly meeting squad members not on World Cup duty, a moment he described as both an honour and the start of fresh challenges.

The presence of these squad members, all unavailable for the World Cup, underscored the immediate task ahead for the new Blues boss.
Speaking to club media, Alonso said: "It feels great. It's a big honour to be part of this club – it's a great club, one of the best in the world over the last few decades." He added that the challenges ahead were "nice challenges" that made the moment beautiful.
The agreement to bring the Spaniard to Stamford Bridge was finalised early in the summer, ending weeks of speculation over Chelsea’s managerial vacancy. Thursday therefore marked the first day he could begin work with his squad.
Alonso reflected that "the timings are always important and it came at the right time for all the parts," emphasizing the suitability of the appointment. He believes the potential and opportunity at the club were the right fit.
He continued, "The potential of the team and the squad made me very excited – to find a squad to work with, to create a football idea and to bring excitement to the stadium and to connect to the fans." The Spaniard’s enthusiasm signals a proactive start.
Alonso also recalled his previous visits to Stamford Bridge, noting he had been there "mostly on the other side" of the rivalry. He said he feels the energy of the stadium and aims to forge that bond with all parts of the club.
