Amorim inherits nine Milan players with unsettled futures
Ruben Amorim inherits nine Milan players with unsettled futures as he takes charge at the Serie A club. The Rossoneri finished the 2025-26 season without Champions League qualification despite spending much of the campaign in second place.
Amorim arrives amid major upheaval at Milan, with Massimiliano Allegri, Igli Tare, Geoffrey Moncada and Giorgio Furlani all dismissed within 24 hours of the Serie A season ending. The club has since appointed Amorim, who replaces Allegri, while a new sporting director and technical director remain unconfirmed.
The most pressing issue involves Rafael Leao, who has publicly stated his desire to leave Milan during pre-season interviews. La dello Sport reports Milan are seeking €50m for the Portugal international, though finding a willing buyer has proven difficult.
Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation may not suit Leao’s playing style, raising further doubts over his future. Luka Modric, now 40, faces a career-defining decision after his one-year contract with an extension option expires this summer.
Modric joined Milan on a free transfer last summer and has not yet confirmed whether he will continue playing. Adrien Rabiot, another summer arrival under Allegri, remains linked with a move to Napoli under his former Juventus coach.
Milan have no intention of selling Christian Pulisic this summer, despite his unsigned contract. The USMNT midfielder is under contract until 2027 with a club option to extend, and owner Gerry Cardinale is reportedly eager to retain him.
Mike Maignan’s future is also uncertain, with La dello Sport suggesting a lack of Champions League football and boardroom instability has dampened his enthusiasm. Returning loanees Samuel Chukwueze, Ismael Bennacer, Yunus Musah and Warren Bondo are unlikely to feature prominently under Amorim.
Chukwueze could join Fulham permanently, while Bennacer returns from Dinamo Zagreb, Musah from Atalanta and Bondo from Cremonese. Amorim must resolve these nine situations before addressing new signings.
