Anderlecht chairman Verschueren explains Vitor Bruno hire
RSC Anderlecht appointed 43‑year‑old Portuguese Vitor Bruno as head coach, with his first training session on Wednesday and a second on Thursday, and immediately mandated that all players wear shin guards during practice. The move signals Anderlecht's intent to revamp its style under the new manager.
Michael Verschueren, chairman of Anderlecht, told Het why the club selected Bruno. He said, "De nieuwe trainer vinkt veel vakjes af."
Verschueren noted that in the past Anderlecht sometimes appointed a new coach too quickly and limited the search to coaches available in Belgium. He added that the screening process is now much broader, mirroring the earlier search for a new sporting director.
Bruno's only top‑level assignment was as head coach of Porto, where he oversaw 29 matches. He also admits he is unfamiliar with the Belgian league.
Verschueren replied, "Klopt, maar dat kan ook een voordeel zijn," suggesting that lack of preconceptions could help. He said Bruno is young, wants to attack and win in a good way, and hopes he will restore the Anderlecht playing style.
Despite limited experience, the club believes Bruno matches the profile needed to deliver attractive and successful football. The board expects his fresh approach to help Anderlecht return to the top.
He emphasized that the club now focuses on the profile rather than specific names.
