Araújo leaves Barcelona on loan to Liverpool to free up wages for Rodri

Barcelona have agreed to send Uruguay international Ronald Araújo to Liverpool on a season-long loan without a transfer fee, freeing up wage space to register Spain midfielder Rodri.

The move addresses an urgent registration need: FC Barcelona had to reduce their salary cap to bring in Rodri, and loaning out the Uruguayan centre-back provided the quickest solution. Araújo, the club captain, will return to the Camp Nou when the loan expires.

The agreement includes a familiar clause preventing Araújo from facing Barcelona in the Champions League, the only scenario in which the two clubs could meet while he plays in the Premier League. Barcelona have previously applied this clause in loans involving Pablo Torre and Nico González.

The decision follows Araújo’s unsettled summer, marked by muscle problems and a complete absence at the 2026 World Cup with Uruguay. With five centre-backs now available for two positions, head coach Hansi Flick has stated no further signings will arrive in this position.

The case of Álvaro Cortés reinforces that stance: the defender from Zaragoza made his debut against Alavés, played the full 90 minutes alongside Cubarsí, and was told in pre-season he would stay, effectively closing the door on any new arrival in that role.

The squad gains a World Cup-winning midfielder in Rodri, but loses its most experienced European defender in the dressing room. With Gerard Martín and Eric García deployed across multiple positions, a long-term injury would force Flick to turn to a 21-year-old academy player for Champions League football, with the January window the only remaining adjustment period.

Araújo’s loan to Liverpool runs for one season and includes no transfer fee, with the Uruguayan defender expected to return to Barcelona at its conclusion.
