Arsenal’s hidden gamble: why Mikel Arteta eyes Bruno Guimarães

🇬🇧

Arsenal’s pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães has intensified, with Mikel Arteta is keen to secure the 28‑year‑old Brazilian before his contract expires in 2028. Guimarães logged nine goals and eight assists in 41 appearances last season, placing him among the Premier League’s top central midfielders.

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano said Arsenal are big admirers of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães. He added, “Obviously, Newcastle sold Sandro Tonali, Newcastle sold Anthony Gordon, so now Newcastle don’t have any intention to let Bruno Guimarães go.”

Romano also noted that Arsenal’s earlier offer of £55 million was rejected. He said Mikel Arteta “really, really likes the player” and is driving the interest internally.

Guimarães is a tough‑tackling, box‑to‑box midfielder who can also operate as a defensive midfielder when required. His ability to time challenges, pass accurately and contribute nine goals and eight assists last season makes him a well‑rounded option for the Gunners.

The Brazilian, who turned 28 last year, featured for Brazil in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C match against Morocco, as captured in a June 13 photo by Kevin C. Cox. His prime years align with Arsenal’s need for midfield depth.

Guimarães’ contract with Newcastle runs until the summer of 2028, meaning a cheap deal this summer is unlikely. Nevertheless, Arteta’s expressed enthusiasm suggests Arsenal may still launch a bid before the transfer window closes.
