Aston Villa eyes River Plate’s rising keeper amid €21m clause
Aston Villa have been linked with a move for 21‑year‑old River Plate goalkeeper Santiago Beltrán, whose release clause is reported at roughly €21.3 million (about £18.3 million). The Argentine keeper, under contract until December 2027, has attracted interest from several European clubs but no formal offer has been made yet.
Beltrán became River Plate’s first‑choice goalkeeper quickly under manager Eduardo Coudet, playing 26 matches since his senior debut in January. In those games he conceded 18 goals and kept 13 clean sheets, impressive figures for a 21‑year‑old in his first full season.
His form earned him a senior Argentina call‑up, debuting against Honduras. The national team exposure adds to his growing reputation in South America.
Aston Villa’s scouting department sees Beltrán as a market opportunity, offering a young, tested goalkeeper at a price that is significant but not excessive. Monitoring his progress aligns with the club’s ambition to secure talent outside Europe’s traditional pipelines.
River Plate are aware of the interest and may consider raising the release clause, a common tactic when foreign clubs show attention. Chelsea have also been mentioned as tracking the Argentine keeper, meaning Villa could face a bidding battle.
If Villa act decisively, they could secure a long‑term solution between the posts before the clause escalates. Conversely, a delayed move could see River retain a valuable asset or see another club complete the transfer.
