Atletico Madrid eyes Ferran Torres As Alvarez backup
Atletico Madrid have identified Barcelona forward Ferran Torres as their preferred replacement for Argentine striker Julian Alvarez, should he complete a move to Camp Nou. The decision was disclosed by sporting director Mateu Alemany and director Gerard Romero, who say the plan is already in place.
Gerard Romero explained that Atletico are not actively negotiating with Barcelona over Alvarez and remain determined to keep the Argentine at the Metropolitano. Nevertheless, the club has prepared a contingency plan, placing Ferran Torres at the top of their shortlist. Only a few weeks ago, Torres appeared to have a clear role in Hansi Flick’s plans at Barcelona, with a contract renewal under consideration.
Alemany, a long‑time admirer of the Spaniard, highlighted Torres’ ability to play across the front line and his experience in La Liga as key factors. The Spaniard’s versatility and proven record in the Spanish capital make him an ideal addition if Alvarez departs this summer. Torres’ future at Barcelona has become uncertain after recent transfer activity.
Barcelona’s ambitious pursuit of Julian Alvarez has intensified competition for attacking places, especially after the club’s move for Borussia Dortmund winger Karim Adeyemi. The arrival of the German winger would give Hansi Flick significantly more depth, further jeopardising Ferran Torres’ standing. Torres’ future at Barcelona is now less certain despite no indication the club is actively looking to sell him.
Should Atletico eventually decide that Alvarez’s departure is unavoidable, Ferran Torres could become one of the club’s leading transfer targets. For Barcelona, the shifting dynamics mean Torres’ role may be reconsidered, while the Argentine’s desire for a new challenge away from the Metropolitano adds pressure on both sides.
