Atlético's loss versus River Plate's gain: Almada's €20m move
Atlético Madrid and River Plate stand on opposite sides of the same deal: the Spanish club recoups a summer outlay while the Argentine side adds a home‑grown talent to its ranks. The transfer of Thiago Almada was confirmed on Saturday afternoon, with the player set to travel to Argentina.
Both clubs issued a joint statement at 15:24 CEST, marked as Actualizado, announcing the agreement. The announcement noted that Almada will join the 'millonario' River Plate squad upon arrival in Argentina.
Atlético will receive roughly €20 million for 50 % of Almada’s rights, effectively recovering the sum spent on him last summer. The club’s statement, released under the banner Madrid.Club, highlighted the financial balance achieved.
During his sole season as a rojiblanco, Almada featured in 40 matches, scoring four goals and providing two assists. La campaign was described by the club as having many more shadows than lights, prompting the decision to place him on the market.
River Plate, currently navigating a sporting crisis under coach Chacho Coudet, sees Almada’s return after four years as a boost. El Argentine side hopes the midfielder can help lift the squad out of its difficulties.
Flamengo appeared as a potential destination only days earlier, yet River entered with force, convincing Almada and his companion Mendoza to choose the Argentine club.
“De esta forma, concluye la aventura del futbolista argentino en nuestro club,” the Atlético statement read, adding that the club wishes Almada much luck in his future professional and personal projects.
The deal underscores Atlético’s ability to recoup its investment while River Plate strengthens its roster, a dual narrative that reflects the differing priorities of the two clubs. MadridJavier observers will watch how the midfielder’s return influences both his former and new homes.
