AZ bids for FC Groningen striker Thom van Bergen
AZ has submitted several offers for FC Groningen's 22‑year‑old striker Thom van Bergen, who is keen on a move, although the Dutch forward remains under contract with Groningen until mid‑2028 and the club reportedly seeks €5 million as the Alkmaar side aims to strengthen its attack.
FC Groningen has turned down the bids from AZ. The exact amounts of the offers have not been disclosed. The 22‑year‑old is an Eredivisie striker for the club.
AZ's interest in Van Bergen dates back to early June, when the cup‑winning side announced its desire to add the young forward. The Dutch club reportedly view him as an attacking midfielder rather than a pure striker.
Van Bergen remains under contract with FC Groningen until mid‑2028. Groningen is said to be asking for a €5 million transfer fee.
The right‑footed forward progressed through the entire FC Groningen youth system and broke into the first team in the 2022/23 season. Last campaign he featured in 36 Eredivisie matches, scoring ten goals and providing five assists.
Overall, Van Bergen has accumulated 126 appearances for FC Groningen, netting 24 goals and delivering 15 assists. His contributions have been noted as part of the club's attacking output.
AZ, the recent Dutch cup winner, is seeking to strengthen its attack with the addition of Van Bergen. The Alkmaar side has already submitted multiple offers.
