Barcelona Leads Race to Sign 18-Year-Old Defender Lucas Herrington

FC Barcelona are currently ahead of rival clubs in the pursuit of 18‑year‑old Australian defender Lucas Herrington, who plays for Colorado Rapids. The teenager, standing 1.93 m tall, has already earned four senior caps for Australia and recorded 17 MLS appearances with one goal and one assist. Barcelona’s scouting department has shifted its focus from the traditional Catalan and Spanish markets toward identifying larger, more physical defenders. The club now prioritises size, strength and athleticism to meet modern football’s faster transitions and physical demands. The new approach was illustrated by the winter‑window acquisition of Juwensley Onstein, a defender signed by Barcelona. A photo by Elizabeth Ruiz Ruiz (Getty Images) accompanied the announcement of his signing. Lucas Herrington began his career with Brisbane Roar before moving to the MLS club Colorado Rapids in the winter transfer window. Since joining Colorado Rapids he has featured in 17 matches, scoring once and providing an assist. A separate image by Luiza Moraes (Getty Images) was used in the report on his progress. Herrington has already made four appearances for the Australian senior national team. He is included in the squad preparing for the FIFA World Cup 2026. His contract with Colorado Rapids runs until 31 December 2029, with the club holding an option to extend it by an additional year. Despite interest from several clubs, Barcelona are reported to be making progress toward securing his signature. If the transfer materialises, Herrington is expected to join Barcelona’s reserve side Barça Atletic. The reserve team is overseen by former player Juliano Belletti, who will integrate the teenager into the squad.
