Barcelona loan Diego Kochen to Lyngby with €1.5m purchase option

Barcelona have agreed to loan 22‑year‑old goalkeeper Diego Kochen to Danish Superliga side Lyngby for the 2024‑25 season, with a €1.5 million option to buy next summer. The move follows a season without first‑team appearances and aims to give the American international regular playing time. Kochen arrived at Barcelona in 2019 at the age of 13, having been identified as one of the club’s brightest young goalkeeping prospects. The Spanish side regarded him as a long‑term investment and he quickly progressed through the youth ranks. He earned a call‑up to the first team in the 2023‑24 season under coach Xavi Hernandez. Germany’s national team manager Hansi Flick also named the American international as his third‑choice goalkeeper on several occasions, though Kochen never made an official debut. Barcelona and Lyngby are now in the final stage of negotiations, agreeing on a one‑year loan with a €1.5 million purchase clause for next summer. Barcelona have granted Kochen permission to travel to Copenhagen to complete the paperwork and join pre‑season on Wednesday. The loan deal allows Barcelona to retain a significant percentage of Kochen’s economic rights. Consequently, the Catalan club will receive a large share of any future transfer fee involving the goalkeeper. Kochen has not been called up to the United States Men’s National Team for the ongoing World Cup, a factor cited in his desire for a move. Limited minutes in Spain left him out of the squad, prompting the loan. Competing in the Danish first division should give Kochen the chance to showcase his abilities and attract a lucrative transfer. A return to Barcelona appears unlikely, given the presence of Joan Garcia and his established quality. A full season as Lyngby’s starter could boost Kochen’s confidence and accelerate his career progression. The loan offers the young goalkeeper the exposure he missed while on the periphery of Barcelona’s senior roster.
