Barcelona rule out Herrington bid amid €20m Colorado Rapids valuation

Barcelona will not enter a bidding war for 18-year-old Australian centre-back Lucas Herrington, despite initial interest from their scouting department. The La Liga club had monitored Herrington on multiple occasions but are no longer prioritising his signature. Herrington, who plays for Colorado Rapids in MLS, has drawn attention across Europe after strong performances domestically and for the Australian national team. Barcelona reportedly made an initial offer worth around €10 million, but Colorado Rapids rejected it due to their valuation of the defender exceeding €20 million.

The Colorado Rapids defender’s contract runs until the end of December 2029, with an additional one-year option, strengthening their negotiating position. Barcelona sporting director Deco continues to consider the centre-back position for future transfer windows but has deprioritised Herrington. The club remains active in scouting young talents globally, though no immediate deals are planned.

Herrington is not the only defender Barcelona have recently considered. The club is not pursuing 18-year-old Philadelphia Union centre-back Neil Pierre, 17-year-old Le Havre defender Stephan Zagadou, or 20-year-old Trabzonspor midfielder Christ Inao Oulai at this stage. Barcelona’s recruitment strategy currently favours signing a new centre-forward, with Julian Alvarez among their targets.

Herrington has made 28 appearances for Colorado Rapids since joining the club. His performances have earned him call-ups to the Australian national team setup, where he has featured in three matches. The valuation gap between Barcelona’s offer and Colorado Rapids’ asking price has effectively ended the potential transfer for now.

Deco confirmed that Barcelona will maintain a long-term scouting approach, focusing on emerging talents without rushing into immediate deals. The club’s patience in the market reflects their preference to avoid overpaying for young prospects.
